North Vancouver City Chess Championships 2018

On Saturday, April 28, 2018, the inaugural North Vancouver City Chess Championships saw 58 players from Kindergarten to Grade 12 vying for the top prizes and the title of the 2018 North Vancouver City Chess Champion!  Most players were from the North Shore; but, there were players also coming from as far as Vancouver Island.  Players ranged from unrated, first time players to seasoned players with established ratings between 1800-2100, including players with BC Provincial Championship titles.

All Players in the 2018 North Vancouver City Chess Championships received their individual player chess photo with the City of North Vancouver flag; and a Keen Competitor certificate signed by Mayor Darrell R. Mussatto.

During the lunch break, players were treated to the Try to Beat a Chess Master event.  FIDE Master John Doknjas and National Master Joshua Doknjas, along with the 2018 BC Provincial Grade Champions, Neil Doknjas (Grade 7) and William Bremner (Grade 11), and National Candidate Masters Joe Soliven and Bennett Schnabel took on all challengers in 5 min blitz games.  This event was very popular and offered chess prizes to all the approx. 40 participants.

Special Announcement:   Try to Beat a Chess Master Event

FIDE Master John Doknjas and National Master Joshua Doknjas, along with the 2018 BC Provincial Grade Champions, Neil Doknjas (Grade 7) and William Bremner (Grade 11), will be taking on all challengers in our “Try to Beat a Chess Master” event.  This event offers lots and lots of prizes, so please sign up early by emailing player’s name and grade to:  bcchessworkshops@gmail.com

The 2018 North Vancouver City Chess Championships welcomes all students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Players will play 5 rounds of chess with other students in the same grade section to vie for the title of the 2018 North Vancouver City Chess Champion!  The 3 sections are:  K to Grade 3, Grade 4-7, and Grade 8-12.

Date:  Saturday, April 28, 2018

Venue:
Sutherland Secondary, 1860 Sutherland Ave, North Vancouver, BC, V7L 4C2

Entry Fee:  $35 

Online registration is now CLOSED.  There is no onsite registration.

Check-in:  9:15am to 9:45am 
– You must first check in to be paired for Round 1.

Round Times:  10am, 11am, lunch break, 1:15pm, 2:30pm, 3:45pm
– Try to Beat a Chess Master event during lunch break.
– Award ceremony will commence immediately after Round 5 has concluded and the final standings calculated.

Time Control:  25 mins + 5 sec delay.

Bye Requests:  1/2 point byes are allowed if requested before the start of Round 2. Email your bye requests to:  bcchessworkshops@gmail.com

3 Sections:  
– Kindergarten to Grade 3.
– Grade 4 to 7.
– Grade 8 to 12.

Rating:  This is a CMA (Chess ‘N Math) rated tournament.

Prizes for Each Section:
– Championship Trophy and title of 2018 North Vancouver City Champion!; 2nd and 3rd place Trophies.
– Top 3 U800 (Championship Trophy and Medals for 2nd and 3rd place).
– Top 3 unrated player (Medals).

Note:  Tiebreaks will be used as applicable (see FAQ for more info on tiebreaks).

Awards for the Top 3 School Teams:
– To qualify for the school team awards, there must be at least 2 or more students from the same school playing in the tournament.  The students do not need to play in the same section.  
– The highest 4 players’ scores from the same school will be added together to determine the Top 3 School Team Awards.

FAQ

Tiebreak:
In the event of a tie, the following tiebreaks will be used for trophies/awards:

  1. Cumulative Score.
  2. Cumulative Score of Opponents.
  3. Flip of Coin.

Parent Supervision:
Parents (or a designated adult) are expected to stay to help address the safety and well being of their children.  This also helps to avoid any behavior issues and contributes to the smooth running of the tournament as a whole.
