The 30th Edition of the Canadian Chess Challenge (CCC) took place in St John’s, Newfoundland. This National Championship by grade level assembles the provincial champions from Grade 1 to Grade 12 to form their province’s team. These provincial teams play their counterparts on the 9 other provincial teams vying for the team championship title and for the individual national championship titles of their respective grades. The CCC runs on the Sunday (Day 1 – first 6 rounds) and Monday (Day 2 – final 3 rounds) of the May long weekend — this year’s event occurred on May 20-21, 2018. Time control is 25 mins + 5 sec delay games.
This year, Team BC came in 3rd place after Team ON (1st Place) and Team QB and also took home several individual trophies, including 3 National Championship titles:
Jayden Qu – Grade 1 Canadian Champion
BiaoBiao Boyong Guo – Grade 2 – 3rd Place
Ethan Song – Grade 3 Canadian Champion
Luka Spasojevic – Grade 6 – 3rd Place
Neil Doknjas – Grade 7 – 2nd Place
Victor Zheng – Grade 8 – tied for 3rd Place (4th after playoffs)
Brian Yang – Grade 9 – 2nd Place
Joshua Doknjas – Grade 10 Canadian Champion (after playoffs)
William Bremner – Grade 11 – tied for 2nd Place (3rd after playoffs)
The Bughouse Championship at the National Finals was won by “The Hustlers” team from BC, Joshua Doknjas and John Doknjas.
